Let us not sugarcoat it. Getting into IIM Ahmedabad is brutally competitive. The qualifying CAT cutoff for General category students in 2025 was raised to 95th percentile but clearing the qualifying bar is just the beginning. The actual shortlist percentile for General category students is typically 99 to 99.8 percentile. Over 3 lakh students appear for CAT each year. About 1,000 make it to the IIMA interview stage. About 385 eventually join.
General: 95th overall / 85th sectional. NC-OBC/Transgender: 90th / 80th. SC: 85th / 75th. ST: 75th / 65th. PwD: 85th / 70th. Every section (VARC, DILR, QA) must independently cross its sectional cutoff.
If you clear the cutoffs, IIMA calculates a composite score where CAT score carries 65% weightage and Application Profile carries 35%. The profile includes academics, work experience, and gender diversity.
Shortlisted candidates are called to campus for an Analytical Writing Test and a 30-45 minute, face-to-face Personal Interview with a faculty panel evaluating who you are and how you think.
Your combined score across all stages determines your rank on the final merit list, and offers go out in order. A raw CAT score of 180-195 marks is typically the conversion benchmark, though strong profiles can convert at slightly lower scores too.
These are qualifying minimums for the CAT cutoff stage. The real shortlist bar for General category candidates is typically 99 to 99.8 percentile, calculated alongside your composite score.

₹27.5 Lakhs sounds like a lot. For most Indian families, it is. But the average placement package in 2025 was ₹35.5 LPA meaning the average IIMA graduate earns more in their very first year than the entire cost of their degree, recovering the full investment in approximately 10 months of their first salary.
